Read Psalm 139.
In this one psalm, David captures key characteristics of God. He is omniscient, omnipresent, and our Creator. Let’s dive deeper into these three qualities.
God is Omniscient (Psalm 139:1-6).
The first six verses of this psalm address that God is all knowing. He knows us intimately—there are no knowledge gaps for God. He never learns anything from us and our thoughts and actions never surprise Him.
God is Omnipresent (Psalm 139:7-12).
In this section, we learn that we cannot get away from God’s love and care, even if we made it our sole intent. No circumstance, no location, no situation, no hardship, no success, nothing can separate us from Him. He is always with us, and that is for our good.
God is the Creator (Psalm 139:13-18).
As a parent, I remember looking down at my kids and noticing every little thing about them—how they move and develop—and I couldn’t help but love them. That’s how God sees you and me. He’s intimately acquainted and attentive to every one of us because He created us with a plan and purpose. Isn’t that incredible?
As this psalm closes, David invites God to evaluate Him even though God already knows him entirely because He is David’s omniscient, omnipresent Creator. He invites God to be real with him on where he needs to grow and follow.
That’s scary. But just think about it—we have the God of all creation who knows everything about us and loves us in spite of it, who is with us at all time, who created us for a purpose, and He invites us to submit ourselves to His leading.
What a privilege. What an honor. In light of God’s heart for us, let’s invite Him to transform us wherever that leads.
Father, thank you for knowing us fully and being with us always. May Your great love for us encourage us to invite You more into our lives. Amen.
