He Gives Grace to the Humble

Jisela and Tomas’ home was humble at best.

If they lived in the United States, they’d probably be ashamed to welcome visitors into their wooden home laden with cracks in the wall that allowed the sun to illuminate the interior with obscure bursts of light.

But when an East-West short-term trip participant and national partner stopped by for a visit, they didn’t turn them away. They’d come to share the Word of God and Jisela and Tomas wanted to hear what they had to say.

Once seated in the dirt-floored living room, the trip participant shared how God had worked in her life through Jesus—the Son of God and Savior of the world.

She explained that Jesus—though born and raised in a humble town—was the infinitely powerful God in human form that came to live a perfect life and sacrifice Himself for imperfect people.

By sacrificing His life for the past, present, and future sins of the world and rising from the dead after three days He defeated death … making a way for people to spend eternity with God.

The couple sat in silence. They had nothing of value to offer this Man who offered so much of Himself. How could they possibly repay Him?

The trip participant continued to share the gospel with Jisela and Tomas—not knowing they feared having nothing to give in return for Jesus’ great gift of grace.

And then she shared the words the two were desperate to hear … Jesus didn’t expect a lavish gift in return for His sacrifice. He simply wanted them to accept Him in their hearts.

Jisela and Tomas were willing and knew they could give Him their souls’ devotion. In an instant God’s grace extended to the humble and brought Jisela and Tomas into His heavenly family through Jesus.
