Hope in the Wreckage

Bikash lost everything he owned in the Nepal earthquake, and he felt completely hopeless.  He noticed, however, that his neighbors had a different reaction to the natural disaster.

Although they, too, had lost loved ones and possessions, he watched them grieve well together; and, even more surprising, worship and thank their God under the shelter of a makeshift tent. He wondered how they could have such joy amidst the tragedy that ravaged their lives.

As their worship continued, Nabin—an East-West national partner—noticed Bikash and left the gathering to ask him how he was doing. Bikash was honest, sharing that he felt hopeless and didn’t believe his circumstances would get any better. And that’s when Nabin began sharing the reason for his hope in the midst of this tragedy.

Nabin explained that he believed in a God who promises good to those who follow Him. Although bad things—like earthquakes—happen, he had unwavering hope for an eternal future with the living God whom he knew personally through His Son—Jesus.

Stunned by this unusual hope, Bikash asked more questions about Jesus, and Nabin explained the gospel and shared that Bikash could have this same hope by trusting in Jesus.

That moment—standing in the rubble of his village—Bikash prayed to accept Christ as his Savior and found eternal hope in the midst of the wreckage.
