Worship can look a lot of different ways.
Worship does not have to be a quiet thing, nor does it need to be a loud thing. It doesn’t mean that it has to be happy, and it also doesn’t mean that it has to be solemn.
Worship never needs to look one way. It is a posture and state of our heart before the Lord and how we give Him the glory and honor.
Often times I think we have a picture in our minds of what worship should look like, but the truth is we cannot be tied down by ideologies about the “right” way to worship. There is no command in the Bible for the right way to worship. The Bible even uses several different words to describe worship.
The only command is that we worship.
The origin of “worship,” comes from the Old English word, weorthscipe, which literally means “worthness” and giving something worth. We must put worth on God because it’s what He deserves, and it’s what we are made for.
The sin nature of our past tells us to put worth on ourselves. Worship returns to God what was lost in the Fall when mankind said, “We want your worth” and “We want to be like you.” Worship is standing back and saying, “There is no one like you. You alone are worthy of praise and adoration and foolish celebration.”
We can worship God by praying, singing, laughing, weeping, dancing, playing guitar, or even on a run. The outward appearance is not what matters to God.
Sadly, you can sing an entire Christian song to the Lord and not worship once. It is about your heart. We should not treat worship as a belated birthday gift that we give to God just on Sunday morning. It’s what he deserves. We can do nothing less because he deserves nothing less.
Will you worship Him today?
