One of my wife's favorite mission trips was to Brisbane, Australia. She went with her older brother and a group from her church. She worked hard and saw amazing things, but neither the work nor the memory of doing it with her brother makes it her favorite.
The trip was her favorite because the group prayed so often.
They prayed before they left for the airport. When they arrived at the airport they thanked God for safety and prayed for no troubles going through airport security. After they cleared security, they thanked God and prayed about boarding the plane. And so on.
When we first went overseas, we tried to emulate the pattern. Pray. Thank God. Pray. Thank God. But important moments in the mission became routine, and our asking for help waned.
Lately, through a series on Proverbs at our local church, we've received encouragement to seek wisdom from God in every circumstance.
After all, He promises to give wisdom when we ask for it.
So we've started praying over the little things again. We've asked for wisdom about things as little as whether now is the time to put our newborn in her crib or if we should rock her two minutes more.
In all of life, God wants us to depend on Him. Missions tends to bring out that dependence because we feel insecure and out of our comfort zone. But God always accompanies us through life, a Person with perfect knowledge, wisdom and power ever ready to give us wisdom.
