Getting There
Whether in a large city or small town, believers flock to their local churches. Christians in Russia often travel by public transportation to reach their churches. Journeying by tram, trolley, bus and foot—sometimes for over an hour—they arrive to worship on Sunday mornings.
Unique Elements
Christians in Russia take worship seriously. You will rarely find “entertainment-oriented” parts of a service or even a funny story. But Russian worship is anything but dull.
They place a heavy emphasis on prayer. An elder will often give a short sermon inspiring the people to pray before the main sermon even happens. Members of the congregation pray out loud during the service and submit written prayer requests to be read before everyone in attendance.
Poems, especially those with a biblical theme, are often recited by a church member during the worship service. In addition, the congregation receives greetings from other churches and visitors vocally at an appointed time.
Common Elements
Although there are distinct differences in our approaches to corporate worship, Russian and American churches also share some commonalities.
Both cultures take time to worship in song, listen to a sermon from an elder or pastor, and have other weekly meetings. Additionally, we all take part in Christian practices such as baptism, communion, and prayer.
Beyond Buildings
The communist mindset still haunts some Russian believers. Churches then were only allowed one Sunday worship service each week.
While some traditional churches still struggle with this mindset, more progressive churches are beginning to reach out to their communities. These churches led by bold, innovative leaders sponsor food pantries, MOPs programs, summer camps and other outreach ministries.
Regardless of location or culture, churches around the world are worshiping and embodying Jesus Christ in unique and beautiful ways.
