Last week, we shared the first part of a story written by an East-West stateside missionary. Today his story continues.
The next Wednesday we came back to visit him and this time he warmly greeted us. My friend and I sat down and asked how he was doing. He talked freely with us, and slowly we began turning things towards a gospel conversation.
To my surprise, this time he was open to hearing the good news.
We began sharing about Jesus. At one point, he turned to me and said, “You’re not going to believe what I’m about to tell you. When did you come by last?”
“On Saturday.”
“Well, I usually have really bad phantom leg pain at night. Most of the time it’s so bad that I won’t sleep one night, and then only out of pure exhaustion I’ll sleep the next night, but then I can’t sleep again the following night.
Did you know that since you came by and prayed, I’ve slept well every night. I slept Saturday, Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday night.”
When he finished telling me this, I shared that I thought God was trying to tell him something. He agreed.
We continued sharing the gospel with him, and then my friend asked a difficult question.
“If you died tonight, do you think you would go to heaven?”
He responded, “Well, I hope that God would forgive me for all the bad things that I’ve done, because of all the good things I’ve done since then.”
We shared that there’s nothing we can do to earn our way to God, but through the sinless life of Jesus and His death, burial, and resurrection on our behalf, we could be reconciled to God.
We asked if he wanted to accept the gift of salvation through Jesus that day … he said yes!
