Psalm 73 is written by Asaph, not David, but it has a lot of the same perspective that David had in the psalms he wrote. Both writers talk about sovereignty as God’s supreme control over all things. A Bible dictionary defines God’s sovereignty as His “absolute right to do all things according to His good pleasure.”

Sovereignty is an attribute of God based upon the premise that “God, as the Creator of heaven and earth, has the right and full authority to do or allow whatever He desires.”

That might be a little troubling if the Scriptures didn’t speak from Genesis to Revelation that our sovereign Lord is the manifestation of “perfect love.” First John 4:16-18 is a great passage from our Lord about His perfect love for us, no matter our circumstance. God-type love is perfect, and that is why the Bible asks us to trust in Him.

“There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear.” -1 John 4:18, ESV

God tells us that His love—His perfect love—that always seeks our best is the type of love God has for you and me, His children. When I sin—and we all still do—1 John 2:1-2 tells us that Jesus, our Advocate in God’s courtroom, could stand up and say, “Paid in full.”

“And so we know and rely on the love God has for us (1 John 4:16).”

Why? Because God is love.

Jesus is the supreme example of trusting His Father’s love when He told the Father that He would drink from the cup God gave Him. You and I will never understand the depth and breadth of God’s love for us in Christ Jesus. You want to know how much Jesus Christ loves you? “For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin … (2 Corinthians 5:21, ESV).”

Jesus may as well have said, “I will get slammed for Maisel’s sins: greed, pride, lust, selfishness, anger, etc. (Galatians 5:19-21).”

Yet, “God proves His love for us in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us (Romans 5:8, CSB).”

So, let’s worship! Spend the day thanking God for His goodness, His mercy, and His grace that we are given until we breathe our next breath and come running into His presence. Let’s go through today thinking and saying “thank You” for all the goodness and mercy that has and is following us all the days of our lives. This is what the Apostle Paul meant when he wrote that God’s grace is sufficient for you and me!

God’s sovereignty can be trusted because of His love for us.
